How to Have the Best Christmas Brunch

+ my recipe for overnight cinnamon rolls!

Hosting a large holiday gathering like Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner may not be in my wheelhouse just yet, but I’ve found my sweet spot in creating a cozy, delicious Christmas brunch for my family. There’s something magical about starting the holiday morning around the table, sharing good food and great conversation. Over the years, I’ve honed a routine that makes this tradition both stress-free and memorable. Here’s my step-by-step guide to making your Christmas brunch a success!

1. Start with a Plan

The key to a smooth and enjoyable brunch is planning ahead. Begin thinking about your menu a couple of weeks before Christmas. This gives you time to stock up on groceries and avoid those last-minute holiday crowds. Nobody wants to be navigating a packed grocery store on Christmas Eve!

Here’s this year’s menu for inspiration:

  • Overnight Cinnamon Rolls (recipe below)
  • Tomato and Spinach Egg Casserole
  • Maple Pepper Bacon
  • Honey Lime Fruit Salad
  • Mulled Cider

Once you’ve finalized your menu, make a grocery list and start scheduling when each dish will be prepped. For instance, fruit salad can be portioned into cups and frozen a week ahead, or prepared a few days in advance.

2. Prep the Night Before

Christmas Eve is your chance to get ahead. Prepare the cinnamon rolls and egg casserole the night before and refrigerate them so they’re ready to bake in the morning. You can also set the table before bed (or enlist the kids to help!). Waking up to a beautifully set table is a small touch that makes the morning feel extra special and saves you valuable time.

3. Christmas Morning Routine

I like to get up before the kids—usually around 6 AM—to kick off brunch prep in peace. Here’s my routine:

  1. Start with the Cinnamon Rolls: Take them out of the fridge and place them on the stove to warm slightly while the oven preheats. They should have risen overnight and be perfectly puffy by now.
  2. Make Coffee: A little caffeine goes a long way during holiday mornings!
  3. Pop the Dishes in the Oven: Once the oven reaches temperature, bake the cinnamon rolls and egg casserole. Set timers on your phone for each to stay on top of things.
  4. Simmer the Mulled Cider: While the baked dishes are cooking, pour your cider and mulling spices into a pot and set it on low heat to simmer. The aroma will fill your home with festive cheer.

4. Enjoy the Morning Festivities

By now, the kids are likely awake and ready to dive into gift opening. While they tear into presents, I keep an eye on the oven and remove the cinnamon rolls and casserole when they’re done. (No need to turn off the oven just yet—it’s bacon time soon!)

5. Cook the Bacon

After gifts are opened, head back to the kitchen to bake your bacon. Lay thick-cut slices on a baking sheet and bake for about 20 minutes, flipping halfway through. Baking bacon keeps things less messy and ensures perfectly crispy results.

6. Serve and Savor

Transfer all your dishes to serving plates or trivets, pour yourself a mug of mulled cider, and gather everyone around the table. Christmas brunch is served!

With a little planning and preparation, you can create a warm, relaxed atmosphere that lets you enjoy the morning as much as your guests. Happy holidays, and happy brunching!

I hope you have a very merry Christmas!
