Classic Rooms 101: Part 2, The Living Room

Welcome to this cozy and inviting space where elegance meets comfort! Join me as we get into Part 2 of my Classic Rooms 101 series! Today we are studying The Art of Neutral Living Rooms. Get out your notebook… or, you know, save this post!

If I were to design the ideal classic and neutral living room, here’s how I would do it:

Wall Color

Start by painting your walls a warm white or beige. This creates a gentle contrast with the white accents we’ll incorporate into the room.

Seating Arrangement

For this space, I opted for seating under the windows on either side of the fireplace. Built-in seating is ideal, but these freestanding benches work well if you’re renting!

Rug Choice

Select a natural rug that’s easy on the eyes. I chose a jute rug with an interesting box weave pattern, adding visual interest without demanding attention.

BCC (The Big Comfy Couch)

This is the Carlisle Sofa from Pottery Barn in white twill. Its deep seat and tucked-in arms make it look more compact than it is, perfect for a cozy yet spacious feel.

Tables

I added glass-top side and coffee tables. The black metal trim offers a striking contrast, breaking up the whites and beiges in the room.

Visual Interest

The gray stripe Carlisle chairs add an unexpected twist. Although they belong to the same product line as our sofa, the different fabric provides a curated look.

Warm Lighting

Include at least one lamp (this is a budget-friendly option), keeping it simple. The black metal wall sconces above the fireplace complement the tables, creating a cohesive look.

Accent Color

Introduce an accent color to break up the neutrals. I chose green for this room. Green throw pillows (I have these same pillow covers and LOVE them!) on the chairs, green aesthetic books, and green hydrangeas add vibrancy. To complement the gray stripes on the chairs, I used a gray vase and selected artwork above the fireplace that incorporates gray, green, and white to tie everything together. Additionally, this Flamingo Estate candle (or this santal woods candle) ties into the green theme while also providing a source of warm, inviting lighting. Not to mention, adding a inviting aroma to the room!

What do you think? Would you enjoy this room in your home? Let me know in the comments!

Love,

Grace
