Let’s talk about a good den.
A den can take on many styles—traditional, modern, or even an eclectic mix of furniture pieces that don’t fit elsewhere in your home. But no matter the look, there’s are a few essential qualities it must have: a moody ambiance, comfy seating, and warm light. A den should be a retreat from the rest of your home, a place where you can relax with a book, some music, or a good movie.
Today, I’ll guide you through the steps to create a contemporary den that perfectly blends old and new elements.

The Basics
This den features oak floors paired with walls painted in a rich, earthy green, creating a cozy atmosphere. The color choice is inspired by my own home office/den, which stands out with its rich green hue amidst the warm white and gray walls found throughout the rest of the house.
The Comfy Couch
A key element for any den is a big, comfy couch. (anyone else remember that show from their childhood?!) For this space, I opted for the Turner Leather Sofa from Pottery Barn. Its square arms add a modern touch to the room’s design.
Incorporate Vintage Charm
Adding a handed-down piece of furniture or a thrifted gem can bring character to your den. Consider an old dresser from the 50s with a dark stain to enhance the vintage appeal.
Brighten Up with a Rug
This rug from the Magnolia Home x Loloi line is an excellent choice. Its mix of neutrals brightens the space, creating a pleasing contrast with the dark furniture.
Add Natural Elements
Incorporating a plant, like this faux olive tree, adds a touch of softness and a natural feel to the room. Placing it in a stylish planter enhances its aesthetic appeal also gives balance to it’s height.
Bring in Texture
To introduce more texture, I added a cozy sherpa armchair. The braided leather seat support complements our leather sofa, creating a cohesive look. I also added these pillow covers, which give texture and visual interest to our couch.
Add Your Favorite Calming Activites
Now is the time to add in your favorite quiet activity. Consider including some good books, music (I really like this playlist from Bless’er House), or a TV or projector for movie watching.
Finishing Touches
For the finishing touches, I included art prints from Linen and Cloth and Madelynn Ave on Etsy, this lamp, some aesthetically pleasing books for reading on your BCC (big comfy couch), and I love this little burl wood box for hiding remotes.
And there you have it! The perfect den—cozy, stylish, and full of personal touches.
Happy decorating!
Love,
Grace
