Sometimes, a home refresh starts with the most unexpected things—in our case, a broken washing machine. When our washer suddenly gave out, my husband (who is a jack of all trades) knew he could fix it. As he began to disassemble the stackable washer and dryer, I realized this was my golden opportunity. I had been dreaming of repainting our bathroom for a while, but with the laundry appliances constantly in use, finding the right time felt impossible. With the machines finally out of the way, I seized the chance to transform our bathroom from a cold gray box into a warm, cozy cottage retreat.

Our bathroom worked fine, but it felt cold and dull. Since the washer and dryer take up a lot of space, the room felt more useful than welcoming. I knew a little paint and a few new touches could make a huge difference.
It’s no secret that You’ve Got Mail is my all-time favorite movie, and I’ve always had a soft spot for Kathleen Kelly’s charming apartment. While her bathroom doesn’t get much screen time, its cozy and timeless feel has always stuck with me. That subtle inspiration became the foundation for my own bathroom refresh—I wanted to create a space that echoed the same warmth and classic style, and every design choice reflected that vision.

After some thought, I chose Cargo Pants by Sherwin-Williams—a soft tan with a hint of green that feels cozy and calm. The Duration line was a smart choice because it resists mildew, which is super helpful in a bathroom. I picked a satin finish to give the walls a smooth, slightly shiny look. As soon as the paint dried, the room felt warmer and more welcoming.
With the walls taken care of, I turned my attention to the wall sconces on either side of the medicine cabinet. Our old sconces were from Ikea, and while they worked fine, they didn’t have much personality. I wanted something with a more classic feel in a brass finish. Adding brass accents would help make the space feel even cozier. After some searching, I found the perfect sconces! To complete the look, I added white pleated shades, which gave them a timeless, elegant touch.

The final touches brought the whole space to life—a warm yellow floral shower curtain with charming scalloped edges added a cheerful, vintage-inspired feel. We swapped out the old toilet seat for a wooden one (easily the least glamorous task of the entire project!). A textured jute rug, new vanity knobs, and a fresh stack of fluffy white towels gave the room a cozy, refreshed vibe.

In the end, we spent around $300 (not including washing machine part) to transform this space! I’m so happy with the results and I think this just proves that you don’t need to have a ton of time or money to completely transform the feeling of a space!
Until next time, may your home always tell your story!
